Abstract

Nursing intervention has been a core of nursing performance in developing nursing practice theories. The purpose of this study was to identify the main characteristics of nursing intervention and interactions between those characteristics, and to offer a basis for building conceptual frameworks w by categorizing them.
For this study, first of all, a statement list of initial nursing intervention that includes 1098 items based on the main textbooks of nursing(Fundamental Nursing, 1978: Adult Nursing, 1992: Maternity Nursing, 1991: Child Nursing, 1982: Mental Health Nursing, 1978: Community Nursing, 1982) and the nursing records of randomly selected discharge patients during January to March of 1992 at E. General Hospital in Seoul, was written out.
Second, a five?member expert committee that includes an education supervisor, researchers, and Ph. D candidates, reviewed the statement list and evaluated each item with three standards : (1) whether each item is described properly for representing nursing intervention : (2) whether each item is stated in a clearly comprehensive manner : (3) and whether each item of nursing intervention represents the characteristics of nursing practice. With their evaluation, the initial statement list was refined.
Third, a research team that includes nine members?among them are six professors of nursing college from different fields, a director of nurses, an education supervisor, and a clinical nurse?categorized each item into two dimensions, I.e., independent (autonomous)and cooperative dimensions. By examining the frequencies of each item on each dimension, the items that graded 55.6 point and above by statistical analysis were selected. Then, a final statement list for nursing intervention, which includes 764(726 for independent, 38 for cooperative) items, was confirmed.
Fourth, based on the main characteristics of nursing intervention, those 764 items were categorized into 27 categories of nursing intervention, and then those 27 categories were grouped into five dimensions of higher concepts, with the help of the method for linguistic analyses.
Ultimately, this study attempted to offer a basis for conceptualizing nursing intervention by categorizing 764 items of nursing intervention into 5 categories with 27 subcategories.
The main conclusions obtained are as follows.
(1) The 764 items of a final statement list were grouped into 27 categories of nursing intervention, based on its main characteristics.
(2) Those 27 characteristics of nursing intervention were re?categorized into five dimensions of higher concepts as follows : ( i ) Performing?nursing performance, supply (application), use of quilts, massaging, temperature maintenance, prohibition /removal, prevention, exercise, wearing, position, main teranie /change, hygiene., alleviation /reduction, use of instruments, and preparation ;
(ii) Supporting( helping) ?Psychological (emotional), physical, and environmental (medicinal) supports ; (iii) Informing(educating, explaining) ?offering education, explanation, giving instruction(discipline) ; (iv) Accessing (decision making) ?observation (confirmation), recording, accessing (evaluating), and diagnosing(deciding) : and (v) Cooperating(Collaborating) ?consulting, reporting, and assisting.
